NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION

EDITORIAL DESIGN | INFOGRAPHICS

OVERVIEW

The National Institute of Education Singapore commissioned a publication presenting the findings of a national survey on the beliefs and practices of English Literature teachers in Singapore secondary schools.

The research team wanted to move beyond the conventional presentation of a research report and create something more contemporary, visual and engaging. We developed a cohesive editorial system that transformed the extensive findings into a clear visual narrative, using illustration, typography, colour and infographics to give the research greater accessibility and visual interest.

OBJECTIVES

  • Break away from the conventional look and feel of research reports
  • Make extensive research findings easier and more engaging to navigate
  • Create stronger visual continuity across chapters, data and supporting content
  • Balance visual expression with the credibility and clarity expected of an academic publication

SOLUTIONS

  • A visual language for research: A distinctive editorial style was developed around clean typography, coordinated colour palettes and generous layouts, giving the report a contemporary character without compromising its academic nature.
  • Illustration as a storytelling device: Vector illustrations were introduced across the cover and chapter openers to bring the subject of Literature teaching to life and create visual moments throughout the report.
  • Infographics that clarify data: Charts, graphs and statistical findings were carefully designed and colour-coordinated to make complex information easier to understand and compare.
  • Typography with visual interest: Carefully considered type treatments, scale and hierarchy were used to create rhythm and guide readers through the report, giving the extensive content a stronger sense of flow.

The result is a research report that moves beyond a purely functional presentation to become an engaging visual narrative. This approach makes substantial findings clearer, more accessible and more memorable for its readers.
